Research Instruction

  • publishable request summary: Summarize major music artists and their backgrounds by major country, with five artists under each era: 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, 2020s, and today.

Process

  1. Checked repository AGENTS.md and the research-report skill, then created the report directly under articles/report/<slug>/<locale>/index.mdx.
  2. Reviewed existing categories and frontmatter constraints, then identified the need for a new global-popular-music category.
  3. Checked IFPI Global Music Report 2026 and IFPI Global Charts for the current market and chart layer.
  4. Used Billboard’s era and 21st-century pop-star projects as an auxiliary axis for Anglo-American pop-stardom history.
  5. Built a representative entry list rather than a strict ranking: ten countries or markets, six periods, five artists in each period.

Judgment Log

  • China is handled as a Chinese-language market because a mainland-only frame would omit central Mandopop and C-pop figures from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and diaspora circulation.
  • Drake is Canadian-born but placed in the United States section because his central market role is U.S. hip-hop and R&B.
  • Important Belgian French-language artists such as Stromae and Angèle were excluded from France to keep the country frame coherent.
  • Today intentionally overlaps with the 2020s because the user requested it as a separate section.

Remaining Work

  • This is an entry list, not a complete country-by-country music history.
  • Human music-history review could further adjust country, genre, gender, and regional balance.

Update Note

  • Later update request: make each artist entry show career background and what audiences accepted, then add a country-era shared pop-culture pattern under each era heading.
  • Update pass rewrote each artist row as natural background and audience-acceptance prose, then added one contextual sentence for every country-era block.
