Definition

Sanctions are restrictive measures, such as financial, trade, travel, or arms-related limits, imposed to pursue security, human-rights, non-proliferation, or peace objectives.

Background

The UN Security Council, the United States, the EU, and others use asset freezes, travel bans, embargoes, and financial restrictions as non-military pressure tools.

Position

They are central to Iran nuclear policy, Russia policy, proxy networks, and the enforcement side of international order.

Distinctions

  • Sanctions are stronger than diplomatic criticism but usually short of military action.
